On September 26, 1881-President James A. Garfield was laid to rest in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio, one week after dying on September 19.

As seen in this photo, the President's body lay in state in the U.S. Capitol for several days before making the journey to Cleveland via train. The body arrived in Cleveland on September 24 and was borne to Cleveland's Monumental Park (now Public Square), where an elaborate pavilion had been erected. Over the next two days, some 250,000 people filed passed the casket to pay their respects.

The funeral service was held on September 26; when it ended, the casket was taken five miles east to Lake View Cemetery and placed in a vault guarded by soldiers. (This was not the current Garfield Monument, which was not completed until 1890.) The Boston Globe called the Garfield funeral, which was larger than the Lincoln funeral in 1865, "the most impressive funeral ever witnessed in America." It was a beautiful but sad ending to the saga that had begun nearly three months before when Charles Guiteau shot and wounded President Garfield on July 2, 1881.

Garfield was a Freemason and a Civil War Veteran.
