Brother James Edward Oglethorpe (1696 – 1785) was a British general, Member of Parliament, philanthropist, and founder of the colony of Georgia. As a social reformer, he hoped to resettle Britain's poor, especially those in debtors' prisons, in the New World. Established the colony in Georgia and named it after King George of England.

Only two years later, Solomon's Lodge No. 1 F&AM was established in 1734 - by none other than Brother James Oglethorpe and is the "Oldest Continuously Operating English Constituted Lodge Of Freemasons In The Western Hemisphere"
