Lennon/Ono Bed-In For Peace

The Acclaimed Exhibit Comes to The Monmouth Museum, Lincroft, New Jersey. March 6 through May 8, 2011.

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE *** Exhibicion en el Museo Monmouth de New Jersey Givepe10

Celebrate John Lennon’s life and legacy inside the Give Peace A Chance exhibit on view in the Monmouth Museum’s main gallery. As important now as it was in 1969, people all around the world are craving to rekindle the spirit of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s most powerful gesture towards increasing love and compassion – their 1969 Bed-In for Peace and the birth of the anthem Give Peace A Chance over 40 years ago. It all begins with the emotional journey the photographs and essays take you on. There is nostalgia for the era felt by younger people who were not even born, triggered by the ever increasing popularity of John Lennon’s music.

Through stories and unique photographs – many never seen before, Art Vision’s Give Peace A Chance exhibition of over 40 images offers visitors a seat on the edge of John and Yoko’s bed in Suite 1742 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal between May 26 and June 2, 1969.

Photojournalist Gerry Deiter became the eyes and ears in that hotel room – the only one who documented the entire 8 days. He was determined to capture the essence of the happening – in particular the love between the newlyweds in many intimate moments. He also candidly caught famous people who dropped in –Timothy Leary, Tommy Smothers, Dick Gregory and Al Capp, amongst others. Deiter’s past experience photographing stars like Ella Fitzgerald shows in the acknowledged best shots of the recording of Give Peace A Chance. Viewers are riveted by the joyous images.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono used their bed as a way to put themselves and their message of peace into a searing spotlight. Through their vulnerability and openness they demonstrated their unwavering belief in the goodness of people to make peace, not war. No celebrity couple had ever used their bed as a place of protest. Nor has anyone before or since been so available to the world.

“We’re going to sell peace the way other people sell soap” said Lennon to Gerry Deiter, an accomplished photographer on assignment for Life magazine. His documentary-style photographs illustrate vividly John and Yoko’s commitment to each other and their desire to break down barriers between power, celebrity status and convention in a sincere desire to end war and violence in the world, something Yoko works very hard to encourage today.

Give Peace a Chance: John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Bed-in for Peace exhibit was curated by Joan E. Athey of Peaceworks Now Productions and organized by ArtVision Exhibitions, LLC of Boca Raton, Florida and has been viewed to date by over 120,000 museum visitors.
