Cuban dissidents 10 May presented a landmark petition with more than 11,000 signatures to the National Assembly asking for a referendum on calling multiparty elections, organizers of the initiative said. The move comes just two days ahead of a visit to Cuba by US former president Jimmy Carter, known for his international work in favor of human rights. Under Cuban law, a minimum of 10,000 signatures is required to present a petition to the legislature. "We are asking that the voice of the people of Cuba be heard in a popular vote, a referendum, so that the sovereign people will be the one to make the decision on beginning the changes for the good of our nation," Oswaldo Paya of the Christian Liberation Movement said in a statement distributed to reporters here.
