"Sour Milk Sea" is a song written by George Harrison that surfaced during the sessions for The Beatles (also known as The White Album). The song was recorded professionally by Jackie Lomax on The Beatles' Apple Records label and released as a single in 1968. The single failed to chart in the UK or the US, but was a top 30 hit in Canada, peaking at #29 in November, 1968.
The Beatles recorded a demo at George Harrison's Esher home in May 1968. The demo was the only Beatles recording of the song, featuring the entire band playing acoustic and electric guitars and thumping the backs of guitars. The demo has surfaced on various bootleg albums such as Acoustic Masterpieces (The Esher Demos) by Birthday Records, and Unsurpassed Demos by Yellow Dog. In addition to Jackie Lomax, the single features George Harrison and Eric Clapton on guitars, Paul McCartney on bass, Ringo Starr on drums, and Nicky Hopkins on piano. The song is notable for being among the few non-Beatles songs to feature at least three members of the band.
One of Freddie Mercury's early pre-Queen bands was named after the track.
