Unemployed and desperate, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman out of a "great urge to help the downtrodden masses.” Not realizing the fortune the franchise would reap, the pair sold their first 12-page comic strip, and the rights to the character, for just $130. By the 1970s, the pair were living in poverty, until rescued by the heroic efforts of illustrator Neal Adams, who forced DC Comics to provide financial assistance, medical benefits and credit to the duo in every subsequent Superman comic.
