St. John’s Chapel: Meeting place of Canongate Kilwinning Lodge No. 2
in Edinburgh, Scotland
"The chapel of St. John is the oldest purpose-built lodge hall in the world and the home of Canongate Kilwinning Lodge No. 2. This lodge, chartered on 20th December 1677 by Lodge Kilwinning No. 0, and is the only example in the history of Freemasonry of a lodge being granted a charter by an existing lodge. In 1735 the effort to form a grand lodge was spearheaded by the lodge, and one of their members, William St. Clair of Rosslyn, became the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland.
Edinburgh was at the center of philosophical thought during the 18th century as the Scottish Enlightenment attracted learned men into its warren of alleys and winding streets. Canongate Kilwinning Lodge thus became a home for many of them, particularly Scotland’s beloved bard, Robert Burns, who affiliated with the lodge on 1 February, 1787."
