The Odd Fellows, also spelled as Oddfellows, are members of one of the oldest and largest benevolent and fraternal societies that continue to exist up until today. The name refers to a number of fraternal orders, friendly societies and service organizations operating in approximately 30 countries worldwide. The historical roots of these organizations date back approximately 250 years although some claim it to be older.
Evolving from the traditions of the guilds and journeymen associations in England, these various organizations were first set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there were still no welfare state, trade unions, national health insurance, civic clubs or charity foundations. The aim was and still is to provide help to members and their communities when they need it along with the purpose of developing friendships and improving morals through their teachings exemplified through their ceremonies of initiation which usually involve mystic signs of recognition, symbols, dramatic plays, and lectures. These organizations are also large contributors and fundraisers for local, national and international charities.
Today, the Odd Fellows form a fraternal network throughout the world. Lodges across the world supports the community and several charities with contributions of time and money, and they enjoy the fellowship among the members. Internationally, membership today comes from all walks of life including businesspeople, doctors, lawyers, teachers, students, government officials, retirees, blue collar or white collar workers and so on. Depending on the country, there are lodges for men only, there are lodges for women only and there are lodges open for both men and women. Membership is diverse and is represented by the poor, the average and the rich, the educated and the uneducated. It has members who are white, black, Asian, and Hispanic as well as Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, Jewish and so on.
