The Grand Lodge of Antient Free and Accepted Masons of Scotland
Yesterday's post about 'Scottish Masonic Money' seems to have caught the imagination of many Freemasons.
We have been asked for more images and we are happy to oblige.
Most famous Scotsmen who have been depicted on Scottish banknotes were Freemasons. Today many Scottish Freemasons cherish the fact that most tradition and to lose the facility would be yet another reduction of the public face of Scottish Freemasonry.
This leads us to make an interesting observation. Freemasonry in Scotland has long been quite open, part of the history and culture of the nation but changes in wider society in general have closed off various avenues of information about the Craft. One example will serve to illustrate this point.
The Edinburgh Evening News used to have a page in the Friday edition dedicated to reporting Masonic activities in the Edinburgh area. It carried the banner headline: MASONIC NEWS.
This weekly page reported the 'goings on' of Edinburgh Freemasonry from social events to fund raising for charities. After many years that newspaper decided to drop the page and some years after that was in the vanguard of a media campaign against Scottish Freemasonry because it was too secretive!
The loss of our bank notes would be, in our view, another example of how decisions outwith our control impact on the Scottish Craft.
